Various types of wood flooring
There are a lot of different ways to lay your parquet floor, but there is also variation in types of flooring. There are three main categories to choose from: solid, laminated, or multi-plank. If you are considering parquet floors, then it is also useful to know the difference between these different types of flooring.
Parquet flooring
This form of parquet floors originates mainly in China, where it is oiled. Because oil is cheaper in China than in the Netherlands, this process is cheaper than it would be in the Netherlands. The material used in these floors of parquet flooring is generally from Eastern Russia. Because the colors of the wood are created during the tree’s growth process, the way the wood is stained varies from one tree to another. We will briefly explain this.
In Russia, the winters are long and harsh. The summers, on the other hand, are very short and usually quite intense. Trees have a growth spurt during summer. Due to the intensive growth in this short period of time, a different color appears in the wood each season. This is reflected in the planks of the parquet floor, as they contain more tannic acids and tannins. The side effect is that it is very difficult to make boards with an even color.
The practical issues
As mentioned earlier, a parquet floor made of laminated flooring is made up of different layers of material. The bottom layer of the floor consists of pine. Lateral slats of spruce wood were then placed over it. Finally, the top layer of these floors consists of oak. The layers of these types of parquet floors can be varnished, oiled or untreated. Unfortunately, there is a chance that the floor can bulge or run. This is because oak is stronger than the spruce wood.
With parquet flooring there is always air between the oak top layer and the spruce wooden slats. This is important to know if you are considering to take underfloor heating. Due to the air in the laminate flooring, this floor has a higher heat resistance. This means that it cannot be used in combination with underfloor heating. In addition, only parquet floors made of laminated flooring can withstand water. This is due to the use of fir wood, because it is a more porous type of wood that absorbs water. This means that this type of floor is not suitable for the kitchen or bathroom, for example.
Multi-plank
Finally, we discuss the parquet floors made out of multi-plank. This form of parquet floor also consists of different layers. For example, the underside of this type of parquet is made from a plywood made of birch wood. This has been glued crosswise several times. This ensures a very strong construction that prevents the wood from bulging or hollowing. In short, the wood of this floor is therefore completely form-retaining.
On top of the birch wood plywood is an oak top layer. This type of parquet floors is always untreated. This means that these floors still have to be processed. We process these floors ourselves at Laminaat en Parket with a good wax, oil or varnish. Laminaat en Parket has a wide range of pre-treated boards. You can always admire this without obligation in one of our showrooms in Alkmaar, Almere, Amsterdam, Apeldoorn, Den Haag, Eindhoven, Leiden, Sliedrecht or Utrecht.

Multi-plank, the practical issues
Because with these parquet floors the birch plywood has been glued over each other several times, there is no air between the boards. This reduces the heat resistance of the parquet floor, which means that this type of floor is suitable for underfloor heating, because the parquet floor itself will remain flat despite the heat. In addition, multi-plank is also waterproof and very resistant to water.
Finally, it is good to know that is is possible to choose different selections for parquet floors made of multi-plank. For example, you can choose an AB selection with a knot of up to 6 centimeters. Prefer a floor without knots? Choose the Prime Selection. Anything in between these two extremes are on stock at Laminaat en Parket. There is the 1 bis selection with knots up to 2 centimeters and the A selection with knots of up to 4 centimeters. There is always a parquet floor made of multi-plank suitable just for you.
Parquet or multi-plank - the clear differences
Although both parquet and multi-plank consist of layers, there are a number of clear differences between these types of flooring. Multi-plank, for example, is very resistant to heat and water. Parquet flooring, on the other hand, is not. But there are more differences, like the relationships between sapwood and heartwood. Parquet flooring mainly consists of sapwood, while a parquet floor of multiplank consists of 95% heartwood and only contains a maximum of 5% sapwood.
Spider mite is the young part of a tree and contains a lot of moisture, so it does not color with it. Sapwood also has a different hardness than, for example, an oak wood core. The hardness of sapwood can be compared to that of pine. If hooks or chair legs press on the wood it will probably leave dents and damage in the parquet floor.
